When we want to learn Spanish online, one of the most frequent questions that come to us is what to do to stop thinking in English; at Dutongui.com we’ll give you the best strategies to start with the best way to learn Spanish.
To identify why we don't stop thinking in English, the first thing we have to do is why we can't stop doing it. Our mind is lazy, when we are learning a new language the simplest thing is to translate.
Translate is not too bad, as long as this it should not use as a method to learn Spanish. Expert polyglots consider this as an excellent tool if the definition is very complicated to explain in the original language.
However, if you want to take Spanish lessons or become a language learner, translating every word will only delay your learning process. For example, simple sentences in Spanish.
"¿tu comes una manzana?"
¿tu = you - comes = eat - una = a - manazana = apple?
Keep in mind the whole process that your brain had to do in order to put an image to each translation: now, remember that it is a question in Spanish, cause the symbols “¿?”, so we need to create an answer to that question. This whole process is extremely long and tiring.
But then what should we do to stop thinking in English? How do big polyglots learn languages in record time?
The first thing we should do is remember that we are learning a new language, and so at least mentally, we are like babies in the new language. When we were born, no one translated the words to us to learn the language, sometimes we learned from signals, mimics and constantly being surrounded by language.
When we are learning new words we must use four techniques: mental image, mimics, synonyms, and antonyms. The literal translation should be used as the last resort and the least help. One of the best ways to learn is by grammar; you can build up your own language based on it.
When you learn a new word, look it up in the dictionary of the language you are learning - I recommend children's or primary dictionaries because they have simpler words -, maybe the word you are looking for will take you to another world that you didn't know its meaning either, but in this way you could expand your vocabulary
Another fairly common technique is to use small pictures in front of the words you are learning, in this way you will set a mental image and not a concept or translation in your head.
Mimics are very important. When we speak naturally, we do not act like robots without feelings, on the contrary, we move our hands, we make gestures, our whole body also moves, we are a message machine, so it is very important to move to the time to speak, because many times we may not remember the word but the movement and this will refer us to the word.
The use of synonyms and antonyms is fundamental. Try to link the new word with a word that you know in your language with a synonym or sometimes cognates (words that mean the same in English), are good tools.
Patience is a fundamental factor, remember that it is not an art of magic, it is a matter of discipline and work, you must take away the thought that you cannot learn Spanish, therefore motivation is fundamental.
The above strategies would be nothing if you do not have a professional and native Spanish tutor who takes you by the hand, the fact of being able to talk and correct your mistakes is fundamental, if what you are looking for is to learn Spanish online with a native speaker or study Spanish in Dutongui.com we have the best teachers to learn Spanish in record time.
